Finding The Best Storage Containers For Sale

At one point in my life, I decided that I needed to organize my home.  With my busy life (jobs, family, home, hobbies) house cleaning got to the point where it was almost completely neglected.  This led to frustrations and elevated stress levels.  Coming home from work to a messy and cluttered home is not ideal.  I did some research on different storage methods and options.  I found that there are storage containers for sale that would help me to take back my home from clutter’s firm grasp.

There are many different storage options on the market.  Plastic storage bins are one such option.  I immediately liked this option because these storage boxes would allow me to pack away my things into a neat, customized storage system that would allow easy and fast access, while cutting down on needless clutter.  The first criteria I needed when researching these containers was portability.  If the containers were made of steel or wood, how could I haul them around?  Finding plastic storage containers for sale was what I needed.  I needed to find some portable storage containers for sale.  To save space, these containers needed to be stackable.  This was the second requirement.  Third, I needed to find cheap storage containers for sale.  Spending a ton of money on plastic storage boxes wouldn’t work out very well, as we are on a strict budget.  Finding storage bins that were heavy-duty and functional was the fourth criteria.

To satisfy all of my requirements meant that I needed to shop around.  Almost every store out there, including grocery stores, carry plastic storage bins of some kind.  They come in many different sizes and colors.  I liked using the different colors to separate and store items by category.  Clear storage boxes also were nice, because I could see all the items in a specific box, making it easy to find an item without pulling out many boxes.  To satisfy the portability requirement meant that I needed to stay away from heavy materials, such as wood or metal.  Plastics are lightweight, and very durable.  I went with plastic storage containers in the end.  Most plastic storage boxes on the market are stackable, and as long as you get boxes from the same company, they will match up very well.  I also noticed that containers with removable lids aided in storage of empty containers because they could be stacked within each other.  As you can probably tell, saving space is very important to me.  Finding used storage containers for sale aided me in my quest to find a viable storage system, while saving money.  Army surplus stores will probably have the cheapest containers, but be careful to buy containers that don’t smell.  A lot of them at my local army navy store smelled like mothballs.  Another way to go is Walmart.  Walmart has a wide variety of plastic storage bins that are cheap.  Durable storage containers were very important to me as well, because stacked storage boxes could collapse, damaging your belongings.

These requirements were all met by plastic storage containers that can be found almost at every store.  Try a few out to make sure they suit your needs.  I ultimately went with many different kinds.  I got a few waterproof storage containers to hold survival equipment, in case we need to leave our home.  They are kept waterproof by a heavy duty lid clamp with an o-ring system.  I purchased different colors to categorize my items, as well as clear boxes.  Large boxes were good for the garage.  I stored tools and other large, bulky items in large plastic containers.  Smaller containers were ideal for inside my home (closets, cabinets).

What I have seen since organizing my home has been very surprising.  When messes appear, it is very simple to throw the mess items into a container and stow it away.  Gone are the days of coming home to a messy house.  We now have more time to enjoy our hobbies, as well as spend more free time with family.  The frustrations is gone, and extra stress from home has been dissipated.  I highly recommend organizing your homes in a similar fashion.  It will save you time in the long run – time which you will be able to use on things you enjoy.

How To Make Your Own Storage Bins

With Christmas just around the corner and Black Friday Specials having just ended, a lot of people still haven’t decided on what gifts to give their friends and loved ones this coming season. Nothing tops practical gifts that people can actually use. Storage bins are thoughtful gifts for everyone. And why not? Everybody needs some space or containers to store things. From chocolates to clothes and to shoes, there are stylish storage cubes and boxes available for everyone.

If you have a really small budget for your gifts then do not despair since you can even create your own colorful storage bins that you can give to your intended recipients. You can be as creative as you want. These are some of the materials that you will need to create your own closet storage solutions:

1. Illustration board (you will need 6 ¼ size board to make one box)
2. Heavy duty glue or Elmer’s glue
3. Colorful wrapping materials
4. Plastic wrapper
5. Water cellophane
6. Ribbons
7. Scissors
8. Tie or yarn
9. Art paper
10. Thumb tacks
11. Buttons
12. Scotch tape

Instructions

1. Glue four ¼ illustration board to the ends of another board to form a box without a lid.
2. Cover them with your wrapping materials. You could try different wrapping paper for your storage bins or you could use only one color. It actually depends on your taste and preference. , Just make sure that you use heavy duty glue in covering them.
3. Put any decorations you like. Like pictures or cut letters of your recipient’s name or anything else. Let your creativity go on overdrive. You can also put dried pressed flowers and leaves to make it funkier or more artsy.
4. Once the glue has completely dried out, you may put the plastic cover. Make sure that it covers the box as tightly as possible.
5. You can add buttons and yarns as lock for the storage bin.
6. Wrap the custom made storage bin with the water cellophane and tie a ribbon on it.

You may also use other materials to make the gift like an empty Pringles container that would work well as a cookie canister. Gifts need not be expensive. People would appreciate it more if they know the extent of your effort in presenting them your gift. It’s always the thought that counts.

Plastic Storage Boxes – Gear Organization

Getting organized can seem like a daunting task to individuals with little time on their hands. Most people are very busy with jobs and home life, and extra time is hard to come by. Organizing your things may not be a priority to you. It definitely wasn’t for me until recently. I work two jobs and my wife and kids occupy almost all of my free time, not to mention my many hobbies. I just didn’t have time to deal with the closets full of junk and the basement and garage full of clutter. I decided to get organized because I was tired of being frustrated by the constant messes day after day. There is something to be said of stress levels and frustration that are associated with a cluttered home, and well, a cluttered life.

Constant Battle With Clutter

Before I decided to get organized, I had gear strewn all throughout my house. Every closet had random items. My basement and garage were littered with gear. My wife finally told me one day, “If you don’t clean up this junk and organize it, I’m gonna start chucking it.” Now, before anyone judges her for wanting to throw away my ‘treasured gear’ (not junk), I will say it was pretty scattered. I had fishing equipment in the guest bedroom closet, as well as random camping gear. I needed to get organized, and fast.

I did an online search for ‘gear organization’ and got some ideas for arranging my gear. I found different shelving ideas for garages and storage rooms. Some had shelving suspended from above the garage door, which I might explore more in the future. I found a lot of different storage choices, like shelving and storage bins. I thought that shelving in my garage would go a long way to organize my tools and other items out there. I found some heavy duty large plastic storage boxes that I thought would be perfect for organizing all my gear in my home. Let’s start with the plastic storage bins.

Organization With Plastic Storage Boxes

Plastic storage bins have a few characteristics that make them an ideal choice for organizing and categorizing your things. They

  • are stackable
  • have removable lids
  • have sturdy plastic construction
  • come in many sizes and shapes
  • come in different color options

The fact that these plastic storage boxes are stackable makes them a great space saver. Shelving units can be utilized to stack heavy duty plastic storage bins at higher levels, and the sturdy construction prevents collapse even under heavy weights. Plastic storage bins with lids are useful, in that the lids are usually removable.  This allows greater access to the box, as well as an additional space saver (the extra storage boxes can be stacked within each other).

These bins can be found in many shapes and sizes. Large plastic storage bins are nice, because they allow over-sized and bulky items to be stored neatly out of the way. Smaller boxes are convenient when taking advantage of smaller storage areas. These bins also come in many colors. Different colors allow you to organize your belongings into different categories. These categories can be color coded to save time when locating a specific item. Clear plastic storage bins allow you to see what has been stored inside, also reducing time when looking for something. This also reduces clutter, allowing you to locate the exact box with the item without pulling out multiple boxes.

I started at Home Depot. They have several different plastic storage boxes with lids to choose from. I went with a few clear plastic storage boxes, so I could see some of the gear that was inside. I ended up getting different colors, which would help me organize my gear as follows:

  • Clear – Smaller random survival items (extra fire starters, flares, knives, etc.)
  • Red – First aid kits and extra supplies
  • Green – Survival kits and camo (bug out bags, spare car kits)
  • Black – Tactical gear (tactical vests, MOLLE pouches, and knives)
  • White – Camping and outdoor gear

While the colors separate gear out by category, each plastic storage bin is labeled with its contents. I went with the same brand so that they could all be stacked well in my garage. Make sure to distribute the weight evenly throughout the boxes, or getting to a box closer to the ground could be difficult. The boxes I purchased were a good deal. Cheap plastic boxes can be found at Wal-mart, K-mart, ShopKo, Lowes and Home Depot. Shop around and find the best price and size to suit your gear organization needs.

 Storage Options

Food Storage Boxes

To gain any kind of survival advantage, the savvy prepper must consider items essential to life.  Humans cannot live long without food and water, which makes these the two most important survival items.  But what are some ways to store both food and water?

Water storage can be done many ways.  Empty soda bottles that have been washed out are great for storing water.  Larger containers such as blue food-grade 55 gallon barrels or other plastic storage bins that can be easily emptied or filled are great long-term storage options.  For on the go water storage or for ease in rationing, smaller bottled water containers bought in bulk work well.  They can easily supplement any go bag or bug out bag.

Food storage can be done many different ways as well.  5 gallon food-grade buckets can be lined with mylar bags and filled with wheat, rice, oats, legumes, and other dehydrated foods.  If stored in cool areas, like basements and cellars, the enclosed food can remain preserved for 30+ years.  Buckets are easily stackable, but not very portable.  Another food storage option is by packing food into #10 cans.  They also can last 30+ years, and are easily stackable, and are more portable than 5 gallon buckets.  Dehydrated and freeze-dried food is usually found stored in #10 cans.  Stocking up on canned goods at your local supermarket are another food storage option, and can either be stored in automatic can rotators, or in rubbermaid storage bins or other plastic storage boxes.  Canned food has a much shorter shelf life, usually between 6 and 18 months.  Check dates carefully and rotate often.

Military rations are another viable food storage item.  MRE’s, or meals ready to eat, don’t require water or heat to be eaten.  They are very portable and have varied shelf lives, usually between 5-10 years if stored in cool areas.  Many commercially available MREs can be bought in bulk, and come in cardboard storage boxes, which are easy to stack and transport.  If you get excessively large storage boxes, whether they be cardboard or wooden storage boxes, they will be more difficult to store and move.

Food and water storage is essential for the survival minded prepper, and can add great advantage during an emergency.
